What is Vp shunt Surgery?
A VP shunt surgical procedure to remove additional fluid that circles around the brain and spinal cord. This fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). if CSF too much it’s harmful and puts pressure on the brain and skull. This is called hydrocephalus.
During Procedure of Vp Shunt Surgery
Vp shunt surgery procedure is done in the operating room under general anesthesia. It takes about 1 1/2 hours. A tube (catheter) is passed from the cavities of the head to the abdomen to drain the excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A pressure valve and an anti-syphon device ensure that just the right amount of fluid is drained.
During vp shunt surgery in India
The procedure is done as follows:
- The anaesthesia doctor will come to you and some questions related of your medical history, allergy from any medicine.
- After that your nurse and operation staff will shifted to the Operation room. before begin vp shunt surgery.
- anaesthesia doctors will give medication through your IV, MediPort, or central venous catheter (CVC).
- The surgery to place your VP shunt is done in the operating room while you are asleep. Once you are asleep, an area of hair along your incision line will be shaved. This may be behind the ear or on the top or back of the head.
- Your Surgeon will make three small incisions : one in your head, one in your neck, and one in your belly. with the help of these incision you can place the catheter correctly. this can be done with or without computer as a guide. it can also done by an endoscope that allows to the surgeon to see the inside ventricle. these incision will closed after surgery with staples or stitches.
- A second catheter is put under the skin behind the ear. It is sent down the neck and chest, and usually into the belly area. Sometimes, it stops at the chest area. In the belly, the catheter is frequently positioned utilizing an endoscope. The doctor may also make a few more small cuts, for instance in the neck or near the collarbone, to help pass the catheter under the skin.
- You can’t see the catheter because it will be under your skin. However, you may be able to feel the shunt tubing along your neck.
- Once all the parts of the shunt are placed, When extra pressure builds up around the brain, the valve opens, and excess fluid drains through the catheter into the belly or chest area. it will start draining the excess CSF as needed to reduce the pressure in your brain.
- The person is taken to a recovery area and then moved to a hospital room or ICU. it will depends on your condition after surgery. while your surgeon will shiftted to the ICU or Hospital normal room.
After the vp shunt Surgery
- When the patient’s surgery is done. Operation staff will call you that surgery has been done. and you can speak to the surgeon about surgery.
- Your surgeon will explain you each and every things about the patients condition. and how was the surgery.
- After you have met with the surgeon, you should return to the hospitals room or cafeteria.
- After VP shunt surgery, the patient will be taken to the recover. It can take up to 90 minutes before the patient is ready to have visitors. You can use this time to take a walk or just relax in the waiting area until the patient is ready to see you.
- Once the patient is ready for visitors, Medicare Spots assistant will take you to the recover room. Please remember that a limited number of visitors can go into the recover room. This is to keep the area quiet and avoid crowding.
